BEST BALL LEAGUES · FREE TO PLAY

Draft your team, then never touch it again

No lineups to set. No waiver wire. No trades. No Sunday morning realising your starting running back has been out since Thursday. Every week we start your highest-scoring players for you — and the most points at the end of the season wins.

Free to play. Pick Best Ball as your league type when you create it.

How a best ball league works

  1. 1

    Draft like normal

A standard snake draft, a standard roster. This is the only part of the season that asks anything of you — which is why best ball leagues take the draft seriously and nothing else.

  2. 2

    Then you are done

There is nothing to log in for. No lineup screen, no wire to check on Tuesday night, no trade offers to decline. Your team is finished the moment the draft is.

  3. 3

    Your best lineup starts itself

As the games finish, each of your starting slots is filled with the highest scorer you own who can play there. Your best quarterback starts at QB, your best two receivers at WR, the best of whoever is left at FLEX.

  4. 4

    Points pile up all season

No opponent, no schedule, no matchups. Every team is just adding to a total, and you can see exactly where you sit in the league at any point.

  5. 5

    The most points wins

No playoff bracket, no seeding, no team backing into a title on a lucky week 17. The team that scored the most over the whole season is the team that wins it.

Why it plays completely differently

  • Bad weeks are free. A boom-or-bust player only ever helps you. When he puts up four points he stays on your bench and somebody else counts; when he puts up thirty he starts. You get the upside without ever having to guess the week.
  • Nobody wins on schedule luck. In a head-to-head league you can score the second-most points in the league and finish 6-8 because you kept running into whoever exploded that week. Here that cannot happen — your points are your points.
  • Depth is a real asset. Your bench is not dead weight waiting for an injury, it is a live part of your score every single week. A third receiver who has four huge games in a season will win you four weeks.
  • Bye weeks are handled in the draft. There is no wire to patch a hole with, so covering your byes is a draft decision, not an October one. Draft two players who share a bye at a thin position and you will feel it.
  • Being busy costs you nothing. The commonest way to lose a normal fantasy league is forgetting to set a lineup. That failure does not exist here, which makes best ball the format for leagues where half the group means well and forgets.

How the lineup is actually picked

After the results are in, not before. That distinction is the whole format: this is not a projection or an auto-pick guessing at who will do well, it is the best lineup your roster could have produced, worked out once the scores are known.

Each position slot takes the highest scorer you own who is eligible for it, and the flexible slots are filled last from whoever is left — so a FLEX never steals a receiver that a WR slot needed more. If you did not draft a kicker, that slot simply stays empty; nothing ineligible gets promoted into it.

It recalculates as each game finishes, so your team page during the week shows the lineup as it stands, and a Sunday-night touchdown really can change who counts as your starter. You are never left looking at a lineup that did not play.

Drafting for best ball

Take the upside. The safe, dependable starter is worth less here than in any other format, because you are not protecting yourself against a bad week — a bad week just gets benched for you. The player with six quiet games and four enormous ones is worth more in best ball than his season average suggests.

Go deep at the volatile positions. Receivers and tight ends swing hardest week to week, so extra bodies there convert into extra points more often than a fourth running back does. Quarterback and kicker are the opposite: you only ever count one, and you cannot start a second no matter how well he plays.

Everything you will need, you need now. Injuries, byes and busts all have to be absorbed by the roster you leave the draft with. That is not a warning so much as the appeal — one night of decisions, and the season plays itself out from there.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free?

Yes. News Hub Fantasy is free to play — no entry fees, no premium tier, no paid contests.

So there is genuinely nothing to do after the draft?

Nothing at all. You can watch your team, the scores and the league table, but there is no move available to you and no deadline to miss. People do still turn up for the league chat, which is usually the point.

What if one of my players gets injured?

He scores nothing and the next best player you own starts in his place — which is exactly what you would have done yourself. There is no way to replace him, so depth at the position is the cover.

Can I drop a player I have given up on?

No. A dropped player could never be replaced, so all a drop would do is leave you a man short for the rest of the season. Your roster stays exactly as you drafted it.

What about my bench — does it count?

Every week, yes. Your bench is not reserve cover here, it is part of your scoring roster: any bench player who outscores a starter at his position becomes the starter for that week.

Are there playoffs?

No. There is no bracket and no seeding — the season is one long points race and the highest total at the end wins it. Nobody is knocked out and nobody is eliminated early, so every week still counts for everybody.

Which sports can I play it on?

Best ball is a league type, so you can run one on any sport we cover — pick it from the League Type dropdown when you create a league. It suits a shorter season particularly well, because there is no wire to fall behind on.

One good draft is the whole season

Get your group together for one night, draft, and let it play out. Best ball is the format for the league where everyone wants to be in it and nobody wants a second job.
